We rebuild the geometry of elements and infrastructures using 3D laser scanner technology

3D Laser capture in shipbuilding

The use of laser scanning in shipbuilding is a cutting-edge technology that assists shipyards in delivering projects faster, more efficiently, and with reduced risks. We specialize in the rapid and precise capture of current conditions, employing state-of-the-art laser scanning and high-precision technologies to achieve best practices for vessel repair and new constructions.

Scanphase collaborates with naval companies and field specialists, offering high-quality services to shipping companies across European ports (Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Malta, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, ...) and Spanish ports (Valencia, Algeciras, Barcelona, Las Palmas, Bilbao, Santander, Tarragona, El Ferrol, Huelva, Cartagena, Avilés ...) as well as those in North Africa.

The key to competitive utilization lies in being able to capture the vessel "in operation" in 3D quickly, accurately and inexpensively. The early availability of detailed and accurate 3D studies from laser scan data enables shipyards to move forward with project planning, renovation design and procurement of materials ready to start work as soon as the ship arrives at the dock repair. Using the scan helps to shorten downtime.

  • Capture operating conditions. Because laser scanning is relatively quick and non-intrusive, it is often not necessary to wait until the boat is in dry dock to perform the survey. It can be carried out long before scheduled repair.

  • Combining reality and design. Reconditioning work can begin immediately and be done quickly, with little or no need for rework, as new items will have been accurately verified against the ship "as is".

  • Reverse engineering. Pipes or structural elements captured in the point cloud can be interactively identified and converted into intelligent 3D model objects with associated attributes.

  • Design. The designer can use laser capture to complete the design by integrating existing and new objects, running collision detections, and creating drawings and other production facilities.

Using 3D Laser capture in shipbuilding

Less repairs and modifications through higher prefabrication

In the shipbuilding domain, laser scanners are instrumental for rapid and precise measurement of large and intricate ship components. This technology allows for comprehensive planning and detailed construction of entire ships or specific parts within compressed timeframes. Given the high degree of prefabrication, the need for repairs and modifications during the assembly phase is significantly minimized. A key practice involves consistent measurement iterations throughout various stages of the production process to guarantee precise fitting of components.

Unique basis for construction and excellent controlling through highly accurate 3D data

Three-dimensional measurements serve as the optimal foundation for construction and design in various digital planning applications due to the precision of the acquired 3D data. Laser scanning technology permits the scanning of multiple curved surfaces, enhancing the accuracy and completeness of the captured information. Through 3D surface analysis, one can verify the precise dimensions of components and identify any deviations from the intended design. Upon completing the scanning process, surface and volume models can be generated, facilitating comprehensive digital representations. Additionally, computer-based collision detections can be carried out, aiding in identifying and mitigating potential clashes or conflicts in the design.

3D laser scanning ensures faster and easier assembly

The shipbuilding industry necessitates stringent metrological demands, particularly concerning ship components and overall construction. Laser scanner devices play a pivotal role in streamlining this process by reducing the manpower required for swift and effortless measurements. Moreover, the ease of handling and operation of laser scanners adds to their advantage, making them highly accessible and efficient tools within the shipbuilding domain.

Accurate planning with digital models saves time and effort

Costs, time and effort are drastically reduced through fast and accurate measurements as well as efficient planning and modeling with digital models. Repairs and modifications will become superfluous in shipbuilding and aircraft construction alike because of accurately fitting parts. Due to numerous possibilities in planning with digital models, outstanding performances and profitable solutions within the production process are achieved. Furthermore, 3D laser scanning offers new opportunities for reverse engineering, automated assembly and final inspections. New standards are being set in the world of quality assurance in aircraft construction.

3D scanning Measurement

The Laser Scanner can capture complex and surfaces as a dense 3D scan data. This allows performing non-contact, 3D inspections with ease. Non-contact 3D scanning can digitize features such as flush and gap that are difficult to inspect with contact methods. Laser scanning for 3D documentation can be a faster method produces a more comprehensive report.

Alignment Checks

Alignment checks of derricks and tower can be completed with ease using 3D scanning. The high accuracy ensures that the misalignment of even a 1 -2 grads over a length of 10m can be identified.

Reverse Engineering and Inspection

Laser scanning is ideally suited for reverse engineering. 3D Laser Scanning can be effectively used to map and subsequently deliver As-Built, Site verified As‐Built, Intelligent 3D Models, As-Built Piping, Equipment Layouts, Accurate Tag Database, As‐Built Inspection Isometrics, better Asset Management for maintenance and future expansions.

Post fabrication and pre fabrication Quality control

Precise 3D scanning and laser scanning inspection of large and complex component such as rotor blades, turbines, ship propellers, etc. has been carried out in and around EU. Complete 3D documentation of the manufacturing status of machine components can be done. Prefabrication reduces construction times. The 3D scanning ensures accurate dimensioning and hence ensures that no reworks occur for the fabrication. Avoidance of downtime is the most critical aspect to install any equipment as a retrofit. Hence it is important that the Rig/Vessel/Plant would be able to stay in operation and while the installation is progressing. To accomplish this, utilization of high accuracy 3D Scanners, in order to scan the available space in detail, and perform clash checks.

Benefits of using 3D laser scanning:

  • Operational Scanning: Laser scanning can often be conducted while the ship is operational, minimizing downtime and disruptions to ongoing activities.

  • Enhanced Measurements: Measurements derived from laser scanning are more comprehensive and precise when compared to traditional hand measurements, ensuring a high degree of accuracy.

  • Site Visit Reduction: Reduces or eliminates the necessity for follow-up site visits, saving time and resources during the construction or maintenance phases.

  • Office-Based Design: Design work can be efficiently performed within the office environment using the detailed 3D Point Cloud Model generated through laser scanning, optimizing the design process.

  • Prefabrication Efficiency: Laser scanning data facilitates a larger portion of new or replacement pipe spools to be pre-fabricated in the shop, resulting in cost savings and improved efficiency.

  • Reduced Welding and Costs: The data allows for an increased number of bolt-up tie-ins and reduces the need for field welds, leading to decreased shipyard costs and minimized downtime during construction or repairs.

  • Mitigation of Vibration Limitations: Despite the limitation of potential interference due to vibration during scanning, modern laser scanning technology has advanced to mitigate and account for this issue, ensuring data accuracy even in challenging operational conditions.
